Job Responsibilities

As a leader of our Data & Modeling team, you will be a critical to the success of BTU Analytics as data is the foundation of our market-leading analysis and client facing analysis tools. Our data and modeling team is responsible for collecting, processing and organizing data; data analysis; development of applications and tools for the support of our analytics team and clients; and maintaining cloud and physical infrastructure.  Our data and modeling team works closely with our analysts to learn what the data means so that its collection and processing is most useful to our team and clients. The role requires a high level of collaboration between analysts and the executive team. The Software Manager is the bridge between analysts with deep understanding of energy markets and the data and modeling team that has the expertise to collect, transform, and model data.

In addition, this role will be responsible for the guidance and development of the data and modeling team. The data and modeling team support critical applications and infrastructure that are essential to the timely delivery of our analysis and products. The Software Manager will be required to understand current business processes, be able to identify areas of improvement, and explore new technologies that can accelerate BTU Analytics data collection, processing, and modeling capabilities.  The flexibility of our team is a key differentiator for BTU Analytics, so effective professional communication and maintaining healthy working relationships with co-workers as individual and team priorities shift is essential.  Being a small company, this role will require a willingness to troubleshoot issues with technology and manage both physical and cloud infrastructure.

Essential Job Functions

  • Management and development of data and modeling team
  • Share skills with and explain methodology to less experienced engineers and developers
  • Work constructively with other teams to troubleshoot issues; Propose and implement code improvements as needed including debugging of code base to identify problems
  • Provide expertise for future phases of development
  • Develop and enact project management system and process for team
  • Developing and executing project plans for new product development and communicating with senior staff on timelines and project goals

Competencies Desired

  • At least 7 years’ experience participating in the software development lifecycle leveraging the latest methodologies and industry applicable technologies, fluent in python
  • Prior experience designing analytics solutions and building workflows
  • Have strong database development skills working with relational and non-relational databases
  • Have excellent Microsoft SQL and SQL Server Design and development skills – T-SQL, Stored Procedures, Packages, Triggers, Unix/Linux Shell scripting.
  • Experience with GIT, Jenkins, Microsoft Azure (experience with managing and developing cloud based software and APIs), and VMWare
  • Hands-on coding, data validation and testing
  • Analyze new assignments, develop scripts and test to validate data
  • Review issues and bugs to diagnose and correct problems according to existing standards
  • Take on complete projects and see them through to acceptance
  • Create innovative solutions to improve productivity and scalability of existing and new products
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working with users to test, debug and document systems
  • Ability to think critically in a high-pressured environment
  • Database Technologies: Microsoft SQL Server  (Azure cloud environment)
  • Programming Tools: Visual Studio, C#, Python
  • MS Office, Outlook and Excel
  • Basic mathematical and statistical analysis experience preferred

Energy Analyst II - Denver

Job Responsibilities

As an experienced contributor on our Analytics team, an Energy Analyst II already possesses an understanding of certain niches of the energy industry and can incorporate previously gained expertise into ideas for new areas of research and analysis.  He/she participates in discussions with partners and managers regarding fundamental forecast modeling, recognizes market trends and is able to help develop new ways to model factors impacting market fundamentals, and is comfortable communicating BTU’s base case views to C-level executives both remotely and in-person.  An Energy Analyst II is expected to contribute to research projects that will end up as featured analysis in our suite of products and contribute to the customized due diligence we perform to support industry M&A activity. An Energy Analyst II is expected to build relationships with our clients to learn about client needs as well as provide customer service that sets our analysis apart from the competition.  The knowledge base of our team grows from collaboration and shared experience, so regular, reliable attendance, a willingness to learn and to teach/mentor others is a key part of the role.  The flexibility of our team is a key differentiator for BTU Analytics, so effective professional communication and maintaining healthy working relationships with co-workers as individual and team priorities shift is essential.  Some travel is required.  The right candidate will be comfortable with customer service in addition to all the technical skills necessary to develop sound fundamental analysis.

Being an Energy Analyst at BTU Analytics entails much more than just locating, gathering, and analyzing energy data in a proficient and timely manner.  Analysts are expected to learn the mechanics of the energy market, understand and quantify the trends impacting the industry, and communicate effectively with our clients to tie our conclusions back to their own commercial decisions.

Energy Analysts typically manage or materially support one of BTU’s products in addition to providing support for bespoke consulting projects.  You will analyze large data sets, research market changes, and respond to client and internal inquiries. The knowledge base of our team grows from collaboration and shared experience, so regular, reliable attendance, a proactive nature and willingness to learn from others is a must.  You will need to work both independently and as part of a team under time pressure to meet deadlines with rigorous, timely analysis.
