Internship Job Responsibilities

The Energy Analyst Intern will support the BTU Analytics’ team by working on tailored projects focused on analyzing specific aspects of the energy markets.  On any given day, our analysts may be tasked with a number of analytical endeavors in order to provide our clients with the best information for investment and risk mitigation in the energy markets.  We routinely work in multiple commodities in search of the right answer and are expected to articulate the story behind the numbers.  Curiosity and attention to detail are a must.  The ideal candidate will be comfortable with both customer service and all of the skills necessary to develop sound fundamental analysis.

BTU Analytics is looking for a candidate for Spring/Summer 2021, with a minimum of 16 hrs per week availability in the spring and 40 hrs per week availability in the summer.

Competencies Desired

Being an Energy Analyst at BTU Analytics entails much more than just locating, gathering, and analyzing energy data in a proficient and timely manner.  Analysts are expected to learn the mechanics of the energy market, understand and quantify the trends impacting the industry, and communicate effectively with our clients to tie our conclusions back to their own commercial decisions. Energy Analysts typically manage or materially support one of BTU’s products in addition to providing support for bespoke consulting projects.  You will analyze large data sets, research market changes, and respond to client and internal inquiries. The knowledge base of our team grows from collaboration and shared experience, so regular, reliable attendance, a proactive nature and willingness to learn from others is a must.  You will need to work both independently and as part of a team under time pressure to meet deadlines with rigorous, timely analysis. Software Manager

Job Responsibilities

As a leader of our Data & Modeling team, you will be a critical to the success of BTU Analytics as data is the foundation of our market-leading analysis and client facing analysis tools. Our data and modeling team is responsible for collecting, processing and organizing data; data analysis; development of applications and tools for the support of our analytics team and clients; and maintaining cloud and physical infrastructure.  Our data and modeling team works closely with our analysts to learn what the data means so that its collection and processing is most useful to our team and clients. The role requires a high level of collaboration between analysts and the executive team. The Software Manager is the bridge between analysts with deep understanding of energy markets and the data and modeling team that has the expertise to collect, transform, and model data.  The role requires regular, reliable in-person office attendance to facilitate swift communication and collaboration. 

In addition, this role will be responsible for the guidance and development of the data and modeling team. The data and modeling team support critical applications and infrastructure that are essential to the timely delivery of our analysis and products. The Software Manager will be required to understand current business processes, be able to identify areas of improvement, and explore new technologies that can accelerate BTU Analytics data collection, processing, and modeling capabilities.  The flexibility of our team is a key differentiator for BTU Analytics, so effective professional communication and maintaining healthy working relationships with co-workers as individual and team priorities shift is essential.  Being a small company, this role will require a willingness to troubleshoot issues with technology and manage both physical and cloud infrastructure.

Essential Job Functions

  • Management and development of data and modeling team
  • Share skills with and explain methodology to less experienced engineers and developers
  • Work constructively with other teams to troubleshoot issues; Propose and implement code improvements as needed including debugging of code base to identify problems
  • Provide expertise for future phases of development
  • Develop and enact project management system and process for team
  • Developing and executing project plans for new product development and communicating with senior staff on timelines and project goals

Competencies Desired

  • At least 7 years’ experience participating in the software development lifecycle leveraging the latest methodologies and industry applicable technologies, fluent in python
  • Prior experience designing analytics solutions and building workflows
  • Have strong database development skills working with relational and non-relational databases

Job Description

As a Business Development Manager, you are responsible for meeting or exceeding sales quotas through new lead generation, “warm” calling, and a highly meticulous approach to the sales process.  This role desires an individual with experience selling into the oil, gas or power markets, a strong work ethic and a proactive approach to acquiring new clients and expanding the BTU Analytics’ customer base. A Business Development Manager is expected to be able to conduct informed discussions with clients and prospective clients, clearly representing BTU’s current power, oil, gas and NGL market views. BTU Analytics employs a consultative sales approach which the Business Development Manager is expected to drive throughout the sales cycle.

Data Engineer

As a member of our data team, you will be critical to the success of BTU Analytics as data is the foundation of our market-leading analysis. Our data team is responsible for collecting, processing and maintaining data; data analysis; application development and maintenance for the support of our analytics team; and maintaining IT infrastructure.  The focus of the data engineer is the design and maintenance of scalable data pipelines and ETL processes, with an emphasis on transforming data into clean, normalized forms for use in analysis, as well developing data validation solutions to ensure data quality and benchmarking. Our data team works closely with our analysts to learn what the data means so that its collection and processing is most useful to our team and clients. The role requires a high level of collaboration between analysts and other members of the data team, so the patience to explain technical concepts to analysts with various backgrounds and willingness to learn about the energy business is essential to success in the role.
